The Combine had taken Barney from them, they’d taken his sight, and then they’d given him right back.

“Good work, Gordon!” Kleiner announced, strolling into his office after Gordon, arms spread out to his side in victory. And it was then that Barney had noticed- there was a second name on Kleiner’s door now. One belonging to a ‘Dr. Freeman’. Huh. “And Barney, better luck next time, eh?”
Barney had opened his mouth, closed it, then opened it again and made a sound akin to a balloon losing air. Kleiner had waved him out of the office, chatting away about some new project he had to get started on, and it was only when the door closed behind him that it occurred to Barney he’d never even gotten to say anything to the new guy.
