Summary
Soul flowers aren’t a ticket to true love, he knows that well enough, but they do mean importance, significance, permanence. And so far no one has ever loved Steve significantly or permanently enough to leave some. Maybe that means he’s broken. Maybe that’s why he can’t leave any for her.
So Steve lets Jonathan take Nancy home that night, and tries not to feel too bitter about the matching bracelet of roses on Jonathan’s hand.

“It’s Eddie. He—” Dustin sobs, and Steve’s blood runs cold. “He chose to be a hero.”
That’s it. Eddie has to live. He doesn’t have any other option because Steve is going to be the one to kill him. Eddie doesn’t get to ignore Steve and break Dustin’s heart and then just die to get out of the consequences. No. He’s going to live, and Steve will never let him do anything this stupid again.
“Holy shit,” Steve breathes as he skids to a stop, falling to his knees beside Eddie’s limp body. He shoves Dustin off of him, wincing at how unintentionally rough that was, but he can’t slow down, can’t hesitate; he needs to act now. He doesn’t waste time checking for a pulse, just locks his fingers together, one hand over the other, and presses down on Eddie’s chest.
