Across from him sits his therapist, her eyes are trained on him, a careful softness to her expression as she waits for him to answer her question.
He's been feeling unwell lately, like there's a weight on his chest he can't get rid of, sitting here in front of someone who will willingly listen is so scary for whatever reason.
It takes him a few moments before he can find his voice, “I… I’ve been worried.” He whispers it like it’s a sin.

Karl set his own cutlery down and looked to her, wondering if she would finally address what everyone but Karl was ignoring.
She took in a deep breath, nails picking at the fabric of her sleeve, and then it came out “So… as we all know, recently, Karl has been chosen to be the next King.” She swallowed, as if struggling to keep from throwing up all over the mushrooms she was previously picking at.
“We think that,” she took her husband's hand, “we think that Karl’s studies should continue abroad, a year should suffice.” Her eyes met Karl’s, he smiled at her.
Her gaze instantly darted away, unable to look at the fake glee on his face.

Before he could finish his sentence, Tallulah practically slammed into him. She was half off the bed so she could reach him, shoving her face into his chest and grabbing the back of his sweater like he was the only thing she could trust right now.
Oh. He was pretty sure he knew what this was.
“Hey,” he said softly, wrapping his arms around her and moving to sit on the edge of her bed. “Did you have a nightmare?”
Her small shoulders shook as she nodded, the front of his sweater quickly becoming damp as she sniffled into it.
“Oh honey,” he whispered, his heart squeezing as he hugged her closer. “It’s okay. It was just a dream. It wasn’t real.”
