He had known from the beginning that the Kira case would end without him. L was nothing if not a realist, and maybe a pessimist if you asked Watari.
It was not that he believed that Light would outsmart him—he knew that their playing field was equal in that regard—but he had known that whatever Light possessed, whether it was the divine, or something else entirely, would eventually overtake him.
