The circle of L’s fingers around his wrist is beginning to burn. He wants him to let go. Why hasn’t he let go? Why won’t he let go, let Light be free of this awful thing he’s done to him? Wanting, more than captivity, more than chains, binds him here. Light thinks he’s beginning to understand the desperation that drives a fox to gnaw off its own leg when caught in a trap.
His hands, damp with sweat and saliva and vomit, clutch at his hair. He feels himself screaming before he hears it, and he knows he must look frantic as he turns toward L.
L, who is smiling.
It’s an expression Light has never seen before, one that feels foreign and ill-fitting on L’s face. His smile has always been jarring; a thin-lipped, wide-eyed thing, often close-mouthed and smug. This is something else entirely. Something hungry. His eyes are half-shut, and Light can see his teeth as it wobbles across his face.

Light closed the distance between them, his arms extended and his palms slapped the side of the elevator on either side of Ryuzaki’s head, caging him in. Light leaned in mere inches from L’s face, so close he could smell the faint hint of sugar on the others breath.

A Death Note AU (after Kira).
It's been three years since Light Yagami's death. Finally putting an end to Kira, the Death Notes, all associated cults, and after insuring there were no more rogue Shinigami playing havoc with humanity, L and his people could finally come out of hiding.
Many people —important people— died but not the ones you would think. Most notably L Lawliet, Watari and even Mello were still alive and well.
L was still L, comfortably pulling the strings from behind Near and all of his well laid plans —though not going completely without a hitch— ended with the desired results, and there was nothing left for L to do but continue his career as though nothing had changed.
That is until Watari's health had started a steady decline, forcing him to hire a "companion" for his beloved adopted son. The boy was spoiled, and despite being a genius, could barely take care of himself. He was basically a huge man child and if left to his own devices, would eat nothing but sweets and probably stop brushing his teeth if not constantly given a reminder to do so.
That's where you come in, and you often wondered if Batman needed a Nanny whenever Alfred got sick, or if it was just L.

L was more composed and thoughtful than to encourage the shortening of the thread, much less engage in senseless, vengefulness-driven fights, knowing they would solely aid Light in his obsession to get L bound and powerless.
Because Light was angry at him, although L was not the one who killed him. Although in Light’s delusional narrative, L lost irrevocably, and that allegedly meant something inherent about L, about Light, about the embers left simmering in Lethe of their… dynamic.
And L was growing quite irritated with Light’s… addiction to victory, maybe. Or addiction to the pain he must have been craving to carve into L’s untouched skin, using not weapons, not nails or teeth, but what, in another life, could have been care and devotion.
What was only useful for pettiness and hatred here.

The red string of fate only appears after both of them are dead, and tightens the more it gets pulled - though it still takes plenty of effort to force it to shorten.
In the relative calmness of the afterlife, Light feels a great deal of hatred towards it. And pulls it hard.
