Vex’ahlia and her brother hunt monsters for gold.

Vex slowly draws her bow as she hears the sound of quick and uneven footfalls far off on dry forest floor.
She sees the creature she’s hunting at a distance. It’s dark enough that the world is melting into darkvision monochrome, but she can see that the monster wears a coat, that it’s in a terrible hurry, and that it’s limping.
Vampires generally aren’t known for holding onto wounds. It was injured in the last minute or so—Vex isn’t the only one after the bounty.
Vex nocks a holy arrow. She should take it out quick, one shot, so she doesn’t need to rush in with a silver dagger and make things messy. She’s so much better with a bow.

Yet another ‘Jim is a Changeling’ AU, with a twist! Instead of being canon-compliant for a while before Jim gets caught off-guard by turning trollish, he’s a Changeling in the usual way and aware that the human James Lake Junior is his Familiar.
Changeling Jim enjoyed his cover. Human food was far better than troll food. Dr Barbara Lake was an affectionate mother, but absent often enough that his duties to the Janus Order went unnoticed. The neighbour Toby was acceptable company and kept Jim from looking suspicious for having no friends his apparent age. Once in high school, he could slip reports directly to Stricklander along with mundane homework.
And then, of course, Merlin’s Amulet just had to choose Jim as the next Trollhunter.
