Life at Number Four, Privet Drive, was, above all else, incredibly dull. Clara Evans spent most of her days in the cupboard under the stairs, passing the time with chores or by spinning in circles until she was dizzy. There wasn’t much else to do.
That is, until the first letter arrived.
Written in green ink on thick parchment paper and delivered by a real-life owl, it was unlike anything the people on Privet Drive had ever seen. Normal people didn’t get strange letters from strange boarding schools like Hogwarts.
But Clara Evans wasn’t normal.
She was the girl who lived. The saviour of the first wizarding war—and, quite frankly, not at all interested in playing hero for the entire wizarding world, thank you very much.

Summary
Ever since Sarah... well, ever since Sarah ten years ago, Joel's stayed as far away from kids as he can. Just the sight of one is practically enough to send him into a panic attack.
But then Tommy signs them up for a contracting job at a high school as a favor to an old army buddy.
And then there's a little girl in the front office, who somehow appears in the coffee shop Joel visits because the motel's coffee machine is shit.
Most damning is when Joel goes in to do some work at three in the morning and that same goddamn little girl is asleep in his construction zone and, when he wakes her up, says she's homeless.
Next thing he knows, she's asleep in his motel bed and he's filing foster parent paperwork.

Summary

However, as much as Ellie loves Joel, she feels responsible for the whole world because of her immunity - and thus, when the Fireflies come, she wants to go.
But Joel? Joel, who only just got his daughter - his still-injured twelve-year-old daughter - and the opportunity to keep her safe? No, of course he doesn't like that.
But he loves her, and when the time comes, he's willing to follow her to the ends of the earth.
Even if it means bad things are going to happen.

Ellie doesn't entirely understand why the things that happened to her were wrong — she just knows she was hungry and scared and that the dark in that particular closet had a specific texture she's been trying to forget.
The Millers are different. She can see that. She's just not sure yet if different means safe, or if safe means permanent, or if permanent is something that actually exists for someone like her.
Joel builds things with his hands and shows love the same way — through presence, through action, through sliding Sally across the floor without being asked. Tess knows what it is to be a case number in a system that doesn't see you, because she was one once. Sarah is fourteen and has made a highlighted document and has decided, quietly and completely, that this is her sister.
Ellie is six years old. She is trying very hard not to need them.

She's whiter than sin and beat to hell, blood crusted up under her nose and around her mouth when he gently lifts the poorly stitched together sack up and away from her face with hands that don't feel like his own.
All of maybe seven or eight, if he had to guess, kids somehow looking both younger and older than they're meant to these days.
She looks like a baby to him, her features all soft despite being so damn thin.
With an odd sense off detachment, he rolls up her sleeves and checks both arms before moving onto her legs in search of any sign that's she's been infected, but the tell-tale climb of Cordyceps is nowhere to be found, no bite mark to mock him. Not on her back that's a swirl of blackened bruising and bumpy spine or on the hollow of her stomach that's just as tender and hard to look at, the cut of her ribs striking.
There ain't a thing on her outside of a list of hurts that's a mile long and etched into her skin.
