She was reaching into her bag when she paused, a purple notebook half pulled out. Careful eyes flicked up to me. I hadn’t meant to say anything, but now that I did, we were both caught in the semi-awkward aftermath. A shy smile graced her face.
“Good afternoon, Zoey.”
My heart fluttered.

In the bustling streets of New York City, crime is something familiar to Zoey Park A.K.A Spider-Woman. She works hard, gets the job done, and gets home before the street lights turn on. But all of that changes when Rumi Ryu, reporter for the Daily Bugle (and also her crush), starts piecing together the clues of who is under the mask.

“Y’know…” Bobby started one afternoon while Rumi was arranging the pastry case. “For someone who complains about her, you sure seem to always save that last chocolate croissant just for her.”
“I do not.” Rumi protested. Too fast. Too sharp. Bobby’s grin was maddeningly knowing.
“Mhm. Of course not. You just magically always have one left ‘in the back’ right as she shows up.”
“It’s strategic.” Rumi explained as she adjusted the trays with more force than necessary. “She gets even grumpier if there are none left. I’m sparing myself trouble.”

“And the price?”
“An alliance by marriage.” Celine’s gaze flickered downward. The air seemed to thin in Rumi’s lungs. Still, she forced her voice to hold steady.
“By marriage?” Her gut twisted. She knew where this was going, but she could hope to the gods she was wrong.
“Your marriage. To Mira of the North.”
For one heartbeat, Rumi let her eyes fall closed. The lamplight still pressed past her closed lids, hot and heavy, as if forcing her to still see her future. The rest of her life—lived out on the arm of a stranger. For just that heartbeat, she allowed herself to break. Then, just as quickly, she pulled those walls back up and opened her eyes.
“I-I understand."
