“Don’t let Zoey hear you say that,” Rumi suddenly teases, her hands finally moving away from Mira’s face. The relief that she feels only lasts for half a second, because then Rumi’s hands are on her shoulders, fingers tracing against her skin. “She’ll take it as a challenge. God forbid she lunges at you during dinner. Honestly, she probably will as soon as she sees you in this dress.”
“It’s—it’s just a dress,” Mira forces out with a trembling laugh that sounds a little too fake on her ears. “You need to chill.”
Rumi laughs, bright and brilliant. “Yeah, but you’re the one wearing it.”

Pheromones, sweet and earthy, filtered into the air around them as they woke. It flooded Rumi’s senses, overtaking every thought and nerve in her body, instincts flaring in response to her mates. That need— that primal need— to take, claim, mate. She shot up immediately like lightning injected into her veins, back ramrod straight as she stared down at the two omegas who were curled up on either side of her, now looking up at Rumi with twin expressions of confusion and annoyance at suddenly being woken up.
“You’re both going into heat,” Rumi said plainly. Straight to the point.
It wasn’t a question, but a statement. A fact. Final.

Summary
It feels like being turned inside out, like every cell in her body is being torn apart and put back together wrong. The warehouse disappears into a blur of color and sound and then she's there, directly between Mira and the demon, close enough to see the surprise in Mira's eyes.
The demon's swing catches Rumi square in the ribs. She feels the impact, feels something crack deep inside, multiple somethings, bones splintering like dry wood, and then she's flying.

Or: Rumi would die a thousand times to keep her girls safe, and that's exactly what terrifies Mira most.

Right at the moment, the smell hits her immediately.
Inside her steel cage, on the floor in front of her are several cleanly cut pieces of greasy cooked meat. The meat pieces looked cold, as if someone had sneakily taken them from a warm plate and hidden it away for hours.

“If I’d written it anywhere else, I’d probably be sitting in Bobby's office getting scolded for offering free food,” Mira responded, leaning her chin in her hand, her finger absentmindedly twisting her nose ring.
“Bobby would totally be fine with it. He’s an ally!” Zoey shrugged, her child-like grin ever so apparent as her cheeks were filled with flaky pastry dough. Mira knew her words to be true, and she was planning on paying for the drink anyway, but she was beginning to wonder if she’d made things awkward.
