Summary
Modern AU.
After Casita is rebuilt and everything is restored, the grandchildren are desperate to travel beyond the mountains. The adults know they’re needed in the Encanto, but perhaps it would be okay for the grandchildren to take a small trip. Abuela agrees to let them visit the city as long as Dolores and Isabela promise to take care of the younger ones. Antonio is kept home because Pepa is afraid he’s too young.
They make it to the city and love it, it’s exciting, fast-paced, and constantly surprising. A horrific accident on a tour bus ends in tragedy when everyone on board is killed. La familia back at Casita have no idea all their children died, until Casita crumbles with Mirabel’s last breath. To the Madrigal children’s surprise, they don’t find themselves in Heaven, Hell, the Land of the Dead, or any sort of known afterlife. Abuelo Pedro isn’t even there to greet them.
Instead, it’s some kind of...waiting room? An entity in the waiting room offers to give them their lives back, as a favor to Pedro. They have to do a little something for her first, though. Answer some very hard questions, and get to know each other better along the way.

She opened the doors to the library and looked around. Everything was on their places. She smiled.
