Summary
Heartbreak and hockey don't mix.
Boston's Ilya Rozanov decides to do what he'd been putting off for years. He calls off his affair with Shane Hollander, Montreal extraordinaire, right before a Montreal vs Boston game. He gets a hockey puck shot right into his hamstring for it. Right in the middle of the game. Honestly, he never guessed Hollander had it in him to be vindictive.
As for Shane...it works. He didn’t want to see Rozanov anymore. In this game. In this season. And now Ilya’s out. Ball and chained to healing and recovery, pain meds and physical therapy for the next year. Maybe when Rozanov comes back, Shane will be able to stomach breathing the same air as him again.
And Rozanov will be back. That much is guaranteed. Shane just fails to measure how back Ilya Rozanov will be. If he thought Rozanov was a nightmare on the ice before his injury, he’s got a reckoning coming.

Summary
“I don’t want anyone to know,” Shane says quietly. Saying it out loud makes his throat tight.
Evan nods like that’s nothing. “Me neither. We can keep it private.”
Private. Discreet. The words settle over Shane like a promise. For a second, he thinks of Ilya. Of hotel rooms and locked doors and the way secrecy used to feel safe instead of suffocating.
“I just need to-“ Shane trails off, shaking his head. “Forget something.”
Evan studies him, gaze lingering. “I can help with that.”

After Vegas, Ilya is distant, completely ignoring Shane. Shane is hurt and decides to try moving on, which ends in a horrifying, terrible disaster.

Summary
"Guys... did you hear that?" a voice suddenly booms from the corner of the locker room, uncertain, trembling slightly with excitement. Ilya freezes in place, hearing the increasingly louder whisper, which soon transforms into a repeated message: "Shane Hollander is retiring..."
Ilya stands frozen in the locker room, the sound of his own breathing suddenly becoming the loudest thing in this frozen moment.

Summary
“You are sick,” Ilya said slowly, enunciating every word. He sprayed another stream of water into his mouth, and Shane couldn’t help but stare at the way his throat moved. He felt hypnotized, trapped in Ilya’s stare, and the other man put the bottle down. “Have you scene before, Shane Hollander?”
Shane’s expression crumpled before he could wrestle it back under control. He cleared his throat, his stomach cramping uncomfortably. “Have I what? Have--scened with someone? What do you mean?”
“You are sub,” Ilya spoke with the water bottle waving, his voice casual. He ignored Shane’s defensive posture, gesturing to the trash can. “Sub get sick when not scene. When no Dom to scene with,” Ilya trailed off, looking Shane up and down, lingering on his collarless throat before continuing. “Is…unhealthy.”
In a world where subs, Doms, and Switches are biologically determined, subs are not accepted within a Dom-oriented sport like hockey.
Sub Shane Hollander keeps his designation hidden, but when confronted with Dom Ilya Rozanov, he can't fight his designation for long.

Summary
Ilya and Shane soulbond with a handshake in a freezing parking lot in Saskatchewan. It actually doesn’t change very much, until Shane’s concussion drives everything haywire, forcing them into close proximity and an earlier confrontation with all the feelings they’ve been trying to ignore.
Or: as it turns out, it’s easier than you’d think to be in someone’s head and still not know how they feel.
