Summary
Jim gets invited to these Starfleet-sanctioned parties every year, and he’s usually content to ignore them in favor of dedicating himself to the five-year mission. But Jim’s excuses have dried up—the mission ends in just a few weeks, and it seems Starfleet really wants him to go. The only problem is that he isn’t too thrilled to run into any past lovers and friends as he begrudgingly prepares for the admiralty. He needs someone to beat away irritating questions about his impending promotion, as well as the handful of flings that he’d rather leave in his rear-view. Jim just isn’t expecting Spock to volunteer.
Or: Spock offers to pose as Jim's partner at a dinner party, and Jim’s absolutely sure it won’t awaken anything in him.

At the end of the 5-year mission Spock is 'offered' a promotion. He resigns instead, and Kirk spends months regretting his insistence.
Then Spock reappears on Earth. Everything improves... but oddly, some people in Starfleet Command take exception to Spock's changes. Hopefully talks with the Klingons go well – Spock has been very helpful.

He feels something dislodge, and the force of his coughing pushes it upwards. It settles on his tongue, delicate and light, and McCoy knows what it is even before he catches his breath enough to reach into his mouth and pull it out.

Summary
He gives him a prisoner with an infected wound, and orders to “do whatever, we got what we needed”. A test, to see what he does with a patient he has no obligation to cure. To see if he nursed the alien anyways, like a conscripted wimp, or if he pounced on the chance to torture him to death like most willfully enlisted doctors would.
Kirk watches him to see which he does, and what he does is neither.
What he does is let the infection fester for weeks, takes pictures and notes, and tests theories.
