Wumuti fell in love like falling off a cliff, clawing and screaming, dirt under her nails and bruises on her knees, and landing at the bottom breath pushed from her lungs wondering “how did I survive?”

Haru glanced up to find Wumuti tilting his head at him, the red tassels in his shiny dark hair swaying.
“You’re fidgeting a lot,” Wumuti continued, “like a naughty little fox. Something on your mind?”
If Haru truly were a fox, his ears would be pinned back against his head. He had no idea how long Wumuti had been watching his internal struggle; what kind of faces he’d been making, given the nature of his thoughts.
In the winter of Haru’s nineteenth birthday, the seedling Wumuti had planted in his heart grew a new leaf.
