Summary
Eric Bittle had it all: a fairy-tale marriage to his college sweetheart, two great kids, a thriving career. Until the day his cheating husband up and left him for a younger man. Now a single parent, Eric’s just trying to get through each day as best as he can.
Professional hockey player Jack Zimmermann also had it all, up until the day his pop star wife left him for his linemate. In need of a fresh start, Jack finds himself on the other side of the country to finish out his NHL career with a new team, the Providence Falconers.
When their paths keep crossing, Eric and Jack form an unlikely friendship. Neither is looking for romance. But that just might happen, anyway.

Summary
“Bitty had to tell Jack about the fic.
He didn’t want to tell Jack about it. Neither the fic in question, nor the small-but-growing “Alexei Mashkov/Jack Zimmermann” tag on AO3 that was rapidly gaining on the existing “Kent Parson/Jack Zimmermann” tag. But he had to, he reasoned, because it would be better for Jack to hear it from Bitty than from Ransom and Holster, who would be totally annoying about it.”
Or, the one where Holster discovers Men's Hockey RPF.

“‘The kids are getting older. They’re going to go off and start their own families and we’ll only see them during the holidays! If I don’t have Thanksgiving, what do I have?’ Bitty’s voice quavers a little.
‘What am I, chopped liver?’ But Jack understands where Bitty’s coming from. Ellie just started her senior year of college. Matty’s applying to colleges, some of them on the West Coast. Next year at this time, he and Bitty could be empty nesters.
‘You,’ Bitty says fondly, ‘are my rock.’ The endearment isn’t a new one, but it warms Jack up all the same. Jack can be the rock. He’s good at being the rock.”
Or, Thanksgiving with the Bittle-Zimmermanns.

Summary
"She knows people look at Jack—already big for his age and already resembling Bobby more than he resembles her—and expect he’ll follow in his father’s footsteps, onto the ice and all the way to a Stanley Cup. ‘His father’s son,’ they say, even though Jack has her eyes. He has her moods too; the anxiety that eats at her from the inside out is already apparent even though he’s so young. In the early hours of the morning, when she can’t sleep, Alicia thinks about her quiet, awkward son and worries he’s hers in all the wrong ways."
Or, Alicia Zimmermann, through the years.

“Sweetheart, I know how you feel about slowing down, but maybe you should try to change the narrative,” Bitty says gently.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, instead of telling yourself you’re falling short of some arbitrary standard you’ve set for yourself—your healthy self, by the way—try thinking of it as recovering. Right now the best thing you can do for yourself is rest a little so you can start the new season healthy and strong. When’s the last time you gave yourself permission to do that?"
Permission? That’s a new concept. Jack can’t recall ever giving himself permission to slow down.
Or, the one where Jack spends a summer injured and learns a few things in the process.

Summary
Jack graduated from college in May with a history degree and no immediate plans for the future. The only thing he knows with absolute certainty is that he doesn’t want to play hockey.
That doesn’t mean Jack does know what he wants. He’s got one last summer here at Camp Samwell, eight weeks to put off thinking about his future.

Working at the beachfront snack shack isn't the most glamorous job, but at least Eric has a great view of the hot surfing instructor to help him pass the time.
It's too bad the hot surfing instructor is kind of a jerk.
Or, Eric Bittle is an overworked snack shack employee making minimum wage, and Jack Zimmermann's job is beach.

Summary
It's been more than 15 years since Eric Bittle graduated from Samwell University, and just about that long since he last spoke to his former hockey captain, Jack Zimmermann. But it's hard to escape the past, especially when he gets the news that the Haus is being torn down. A long overdue SMH reunion, a time capsule, and two meddling teenage daughters may just be what Eric and Jack need to start anew.

“Jack doesn't really miss those workouts. He definitely doesn’t miss waking up in a hotel bed in a different city. Jack’s mornings are a lot slower now, but they’re also a lot sweeter.
But most mornings, Jack’s knee doesn’t feel like somebody’s just jammed a screwdriver into it.”
It's Jack's first post-retirement holiday season. He’s looking forward to more time with Bitty, and experiencing the holidays through the eyes of their three-year-old. If only this injury weren’t making things so difficult.

Summary
It would be too kind to say Jack Zimmermann, Pulitzer Prize winner and son of legendary newspaper publisher Bob Zimmermann, resigned in disgrace mere days before the biggest story of his life broke without his name on the byline. But somehow it seems slightly less bad than the truth, which is that Jack was fired, by his own father, for getting too close to a source, blowing his chance at breaking the story he’d been working on for six months, and compromising the paper’s integrity as a purveyor of unbiased journalism, all in one fell swoop.
Now he's starting over, reporting small town news out of an inn in Vermont and trying not to get too close to anybody. A certain baker might make that difficult.

Summary
“Back then, Jack couldn’t have imagined what their future held: he’d had a vague hope that there would be more of this but Stanley Cups, coming out and becoming a role model, Bitty’s cookbooks, the house and the dog and the kid? All of that had been too far away, part of an amorphous future that had yet to take shape.”
Or, Jack and Bitty in Madison, ten years on.

“Bitty can’t stop thinking about it as he looks over every inch of the oven, testing the stovetop knobs and admiring its perfectly clean inside. Despite everybody’s insistence that it was a group gift, Bitty only knows one person who can actually afford this type of extravagance.”
Or, the one where Bitty’s twentieth birthday ends a little differently.

Summary
A self-proclaimed seer has declared the end of the world is near, and the entire Samwell student body is taking advantage of this dubious prophecy by throwing the most massive epikegster in the school’s history. Bitty’s not foolish enough to believe the world is ending tonight ... but if the world really were about to end, shouldn't he tell his best friend how he really feels?

Summary
“I’m looking at these numbers and I just can’t in good conscience recommend keeping the skating rink open. In fact, it would actually be preferable to demolish it. Its operating costs are high—far higher than any of your other facilities—and you’re not even breaking even on it. And your report concludes with a request for funds to refurbish it? Frankly, the land would be far more valuable to the city if it were to sell it to a developer. I can put you in touch with—”
“Over my dead body,” Eric interrupts.
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me. You can’t sell my rink.”
Eric Bittle is the director of the City of Samwell's Parks and Recreation department. He loves everything about his job, including overseeing the city's municipal ice rink, where generations of kids have learned to skate. Unfortunately, a citywide budget crisis has put Eric's proposed rink renovations on hold, and out-of-town auditor Jack Zimmermann is insistent that the best course of action would be to shut it down entirely. Too bad Eric isn't willing to give up his rink without a fight. He's got a plan. And he may just melt the heart of Samwell's iciest auditor along the way.

Summary
Bitty's pretty sure nobody had a crush on him back in high school. And if somebody did, it certainly wouldn't have been the popular baseball player he was only sort of friends with. Until a chance encounter on a visit home sheds a light on some things.
