Phoenix sat down and took his coat off, bundling it together and using it as a pillow. He shook his head. “I just want sleep, thank you though.”
Edgeworth sat on the edge of the cushion and kept his hand on Phoenix’s shoulder as he shuffled around to get comfortable. Once he was, he reached out for him and wrapped his arms around his torso, using him as a teddy bear. Edgeworth hummed and watched as Phoenix’s breath fell into a slow pattern. “So, you think that you can welcome yourself in here whenever you please to sleep?”
Phoenix nodded. “It's a given.”

It's not often that he and Miles get a chance to spend an evening alone together like this, what with Trucy spending the night with Maya and Pearls in Kurain. It's nice to sit in the backyard like this - the two of them in their favourite lawn chairs, sharing a bottle of wine between them as well as company and conversation. A slight breeze parts Phoenix's hair and sweeps over his skin, just the right amount of cool to ease the balminess of mid summer.
And then Phoenix smells smoke.

In his hospital room, the doctor patiently explained that the discoloration was because of the intense stress his body underwent to process the poison: they’ve seen cases like this before, but it usually manifests itself universally on the body.
Phoenix absently wondered how common poisoning could possibly be.
Some scars are more visible than others. When a partial-poisoning incident thanks to a terrible ex-girlfriend (and your own desperate naïveté) leaves you with a noticeable platinum streak in your hair, it’s rather hard to forget the wound that reopens every time you see yourself in a mirror.

“What is his condition? Which hospital? How did it happen? How severe is it? Which ward-”
“Miles, slow down!”
He paused with trembling hands and shaky breath.
“He’s not injured or dying- but from the sounds of it he’s not exactly well either.”

To say it had been a shock to see Phoenix across the courtroom from him that first time would be an understatement. Phoenix was an old, warm memory gone cold with time and von Karma’s influence. But facing that nervous smile, that brightly determined gaze, had cleared some of the fog. It had forced him to remember that sunlight existed. To realize it lived in too-kind eyes.
The gaze Phoenix fixes him with now is as dark and unsettling as a day that begins without dawn.
While Miles has been making his slow way to spring, Phoenix has fallen into winter.
