“Leave him out of this,” Rand hissed back. Kian laughed.
“Oh, but he’s been in it since the moment he entered the town with me!” (a wave of the arms and a flourish of the hands, the “Classic Kian Touch” as he’d always called it) Rolan felt sick.
Rand squeezed him around the shoulders again, rubbing up and down soothingly, trying to help with anything. Rolan shakily reached for one of the beer cans on his belt. Rand looked over and nodded approvingly.

Summary
Rand had always been the fucked up sibling. Not only his brain, but his body had been failing him as well.
He didn't know which one of his parents he got it from, but if he wasn't enough of a failure already, he couldn't even breathe right.
Of course, he didn't know the words. Just that he would lose fights while desperately trying to suck in air, or always ended up hyperventilating when crying.
He just chalked it up to being out of shape.
