The library is the quietest room at Aubrey Hall.
Kate discovers this, nearly accidentally, through trial and error. Anthony doesn’t like having her out of his reach, but she enjoys the thrill of the chase. She likes hiding, finding little nooks she can tuck away and read, or write, or just gaze out a nearby window, marveling that this is her life now, that this is her home.
And he always finds her. Sometimes, it is a matter of minutes, and she hears the tapping of his shoes on the wooden floors as he approaches. Sometimes it takes him longer; one time it takes him hours, and he comes upon her in the nursery, sketching on the window seat, looking world-weary. Her heart lightens at seeing him, and he sits beside her, taking her legs to rest over his lap, and leans against the window to rest. Kate turns a page in her sketchbook and starts sketching him, as though she has not spent hours drawing him already. His eyes are shut, and weariness drains from his expression. She likes catching him at those moments, quiet and still, no expectations. She loves him finding peace and respite with her.
