Essek discovers that Jester either texts in all capitals, or completely ignores them. There’s no inbetween. He also discovers that there are 238 notifications in the Mighty Nein group chat that he had recently been added to in much pomp and circumstance that he still didn’t really understand. A final discovery is that the celebration of birthdays is a sacred tradition for the Mighty Nein and one he is going to be pulled in on regardless of his opinion on the fact.

Summary
Essek's trips to the Empire leave him itching to blow off some steam, and he happens to find a very convenient way to do that in the form of a, shall we say, side hustle. No mess, no fuss, and everyone gets what they want.
Caleb needs to blow off a little steam too, or at least his friends think so. They arrange for a bit of companionship for him for the evening. Neither of them is at all what the other expected.

Summary
It starts like this: Essek, in a fit of lonely idiocy, agrees to partake in a honeypot scheme with the Mighty Nein. It goes about as smoothly as he should have expected.
It evolves to this: by decree of Deirta Thelyss, Verin is tasked with protecting his brother and his brother’s friends(??) as they parlay with the Children of Malice over the diplomatic incident they caused. Verin remembers his brother being much more of an aloof douche and much less of a floating disaster.
Or: In a reality where the Mighty Nein do a stop in Xhorhas prior to meeting up with DeRogna, Essek agrees to help with one side quest and ends up with a lover, a brother, and a fight with a god.

Summary
Essek didn’t want to know what he’d done to Caleb this time in trying to save him. Not knowing wasn’t a choice, any more than traveling backward again, and again, was a choice. He’d find out, rest a few days, and do it some more. He would endure. Essek had found something soft, quiet, and vulnerable within himself that sustained him rather than weakened him; he wasn't the same person he'd been before circling the past. He was glad. Love was Essek’s internal sunlight to hold, something breathed into him that couldn’t be snuffed out.

It takes a while for the name to turn up at all, as it often does when one or both souls are not consecuted. That alone is enough to disappoint his parents - even more so when it becomes apparent that he is not a returning soul. By ten, Essek has begun to wonder if he will never have a name at all. By thirty, watching all his peers struck with new distractions, he has begun to hope he won't.
It lasts until he’s nearly ninety. Essek has been convinced for decades that he’s managed to escape the matter altogether; perhaps, he had thought, the lack of interest he has always felt in that direction has spared him from the entire ordeal. But there it is, one morning, engraved across his chest as though it has been there since birth.

Summary
It’s... the stupidest thing.
Essek grits his teeth. It’s a trained habit - a way to redirect some of the pain without showing any symptoms. A Shadowhand never shows his hand, and it is this he excels at - a poker face, a well-concealed illusion of poise and grandeur and tolerance.
But today, he is unlucky.
Because there is little that escapes the keen mind of Widogast - and here he has quite the disadvantage.
It is, quite literally, his least favored terrain.

---When keeping mages in an enclosed terrarium, please keep in mind the following: They need lots of places to hide and explore. Provide enrichment opportunities for them to keep them from getting bored - plenty of books, hidden treasures, and secret chambers. And if you're feeling bold, think about including an Anti-Magic staircase just to challenge them. See what they do with it.
