Summary
It’s the summer of 1993, and Will Byers, armed with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and powers he’s gotten much better at controlling, is doing his damnedest to make rent for his shoebox apartment in the Lower East Side. Between his day job at the MoMA gift shop and late nights bartending at a popular local establishment known for its drag shows, he attends ACT UP demonstrations and works toward his dream of one day making a living through his art.
All this should, logically, leave very little time for lingering, clandestine feelings for a childhood friend, but Will’s lovesickness for Mike is something he was never able to fully shake, and the fact that Mike’s name keeps popping up everywhere thanks to a bestselling sci-fi novel is not helping one bit.

Summary

And Mike? He's not a part of it. Not this time. He's stayed behind, wrapped up tight in that thing called the past. At least he was. One weekend can't possibly throw Will off again. It can't.

In which Mike follows Will to New York University for completely normal and emotionally healthy reasons, and then they try drinking together for the first time and Mike realizes pretty quickly that there were other latent feelings involved in his decision. Featuring truly Gen X levels of casual alcohol use, cranky hours at the Met, laundry in a haunted basement, a Psychedelic Furs concert, the gang reuniting for a party at Jonathan’s apartment, one scary incident reflecting the grittier realities of late 80s NYC, love confessions obviously, and rather a lot of hickeys. (And they were roommates!)
