Summary
“Maybe—maybe Lily is sleeping,” she says. Bargaining, she realizes numbly. She’s bargaining for more time. And for whatever is unfolding here to stop unfolding and in fact fold itself back up. Her thumb shifts away from the call button. “And you should be sleeping too, mister.”
“He’s not sleeping.” Shane flares his nostrils—another gesture Yuna hasn’t seen in so many years. “He’s waiting for me to call a third time. Mom. Please. He’s—he’ll be so worried.”
Yuna shifts her thumb and lets it drop. Is Yuna a bad mother if she hopes "Lily" doesn’t pick up?
-x-
or: Shane needs to call someone the night he's laid out by Marlow, and Yuna reflects on her quietly, obsessively devoted son.

Summary
“Unlock the door, Hollander.”
Even though Shane couldn’t hear the exact words, he knew what Ilya said. He shook his head.
“Unlock the door, or I will break the glass. Your choice.”
Shane’s eyes widened again and he briefly hung his head as if regretting all of his past life decisions, and Ilya heard the resounding click of the unlock mechanism.
He felt wild, his mind in violent turmoil as he threw open the door and his palm clutched the back of Shane’s head, his fingers finding purchase in the coarse hair. “Are you listening to me?” Shane ducked his head in acknowledgment. “I’m going to call off my driver. You will not move. I am going to sit there-“ he pointed at the empty passenger seat. “-in this boring car of yours and I am going to find out why the fuck you are alone and who the fuck made you cry.”
*************************************************************
Inspired by Shane’s confession in The Long Game (*mini-spoiler*) about his whereabouts after leaving a certain Montreal nightclub in January 2017, Ilya leaves the club shortly after Shane only to find him pulled over on the side of the road, devastated.

Summary
Before Ilya can bite out a teasing remark at his state, Hollander starts to speak in a jumble of words that seem like they’ve been on the verge of spilling out for a long time.
“Don't marry her, Ilya." Hollander says desperately, now using the hold they had on each other for balance just a moment ago, to keep Ilya from running away. “Please, don’t marry her.”
“Hollander?” Ilya says the name dumbly, at a loss for how to answer.
--
Marrying Svetlana seems like the obvious solution to the growing pile of problems in Ilya's life. It's not like Hollander would care since he's dating one of the biggest movie stars in the world. Right?

Summary
When Rose comes to visit Shane and Ilya for Labour Day weekend, Shane imposes a no sex rule. The walls are thin and he's just not comfortable with the idea, okay? Ilya thinks this is the stupidest thing he's ever heard and is intent on getting Shane to crack. So what if he's maybe acting a tiny bit possessive? He's not jealous. Russians do not do this.

Summary
Then Ilya sighed. Shane looked him up and down once in quick succession. He couldn’t quite read his expression.
“What?”
“I think I am…” Ilya pursed his lips “...jealous?”
“You’re jealous?” Shane raised his eyebrows. “Of an inanimate object?”
“What is…”
“It means like,” he sighed, grateful to get the attention shifted off himself, if only for a second, “it’s just a thing.”
“Then why so many words when you could just say thing?” Ilya’s accent clipped over the digraph as he rushed to the end of the sentence.
“It’s just two words. And it’s about specifying-”
“Anyway,” Ilya shook his head, deflecting Shane’s rambling. “Yes. I am jealous of the thing.”
“You’re ridiculous.”
