Summary
Daeron was minstrel to Elu Thingol, father of Luthien. When Beren came into Doriath, fleeing his people's losing war with Morgoth, and met Luthien in the woods by night, Daeron was already in love with her, and revealed Beren's presence to Thingol out of jealousy. Twice he betrayed her, but the third time, when she wove her net of sleep to escape imprisonment in Hirilorn where her father had confined her, he kept silent about his suspicions. When she went into the north and no news came back of her fate, Daeron concluded the worst, and wracked with guilt, went into the utter East, singing songs of his beloved, and he thought doomed, Luthien. This poem begins millenia later, when news of Luthien's fate finally reaches Daeron in the utter East, in the person of Nehaleni, an elf-maiden he rescues from Easterling slavers, and who ends up falling in love with him.
