He turns, surprised. “Mydei.” He hadn’t heard him following him.
Still, he puts on a genial smile. “Coming up for the view too?”
“You could say that,” he says, reaching for and swiping a bottle of strawberry wine from the gift basket tucked in the crook of Phainon’s arm.
“That’s for me, you know?”
“I’ll give you my bottle later,” he says, brushing past him on the stairs and continuing to climb, popping the cork with just one hand with relative ease thanks to his clawed gauntlets.
He doesn’t turn back when he addresses Phainon again, “Are you coming or not?”or
Phainon and Mydei share a drink under the stars.

Hephaestion freezes mid-smile, the words looping in his head.
“…Cheating?”
"Oh. I thought you two were together?"
Hephaestion waves a dismissive hand. “That was over a decade ago. We only lasted a month before we figured out we were better off as bros.”
Hephaestion apparently can’t even be friendly with anyone without someone assuming he’s cheating on Mydei. If that’s the case, what happens when he actually sets his sights on someone? The poor hypothetical person would think they’re competing with Mydei—and most people would back off immediately.
Well. Hephaestion can’t have that, can he?

Phainon gathered his index cards. "I…don’t feel like I absorbed the material thoroughly enough, though.” Phainon refused to be anything less than well-prepared for every class, but with this particular professor and his mercurial line of questioning, he feels more like headless chicken instead, scrambling every time to do good, to appear perfect and ready.
“A bold-faced lie, if I ever heard one,” Mydei replied easily. "The bar bet of the batch wasn't able to absorb the material thoroughly enough? You might as well say you're sprouting wings and fighting a god."
Phainon and Mydei are law students fighting for their lives in their third year of study.
