Optimization is V1’s specialty. From projectile punching to explosion-propelled feats of acceleration, V1 was made to make itself better: faster. To achieve maximum performance, it opts to optimize its energy usage. A more efficient source of biofuel may exist—but V1 needs a means to extract it. A particular peripheral used by Mindflayers seems promising.
V1 intends to test it on Gabriel. There must be something better than blood.

Doesn’t matter, though, because the answer Michael gives is a terrible one, and ends the same way: Gertrude could protect herself, Jon can’t, and he’s going to die for her sins.

Jon frowns, his brow furrowed. “And what does that have to do with anything?”
“Michael Shelley was a similar sort. Are you of the nature to be repulsed by such things or are there exceptions? Or do you like it after you Know someone?” Michael laughs at that.
“It’s— I fail to see how this is relevant.”

He’s not as naturally talkative as she is, and the 1980s were still so much different than the 1880s he knew, so he sticks with what he knows.
He tells her stories about his first life.
He reads poetry to her.
He assures her, and reassures her, and reassures her again that he loves her, that he’ll always love her, that he’s so thankful they’ve been given this second life together.
