Sometimes, Gary still couldn't help but feel out of place in his own relationship.
He knew it wasn't the case, that his fears were unreasonable and intrusive.
He knew Ash and Goh loved him. They'd told him so multiple times.
And he knew that he loved them, too. That he wanted to be with them.
He had thought the feeling of not belonging with them would fade away, over time.
But almost four months into them dating, those thoughts still popped into his mind, were still all too frequent.

If anything, Gary just looks more confused. “Yeah, okay, time to go, crazycakes.” He points to the door. “Show yourself out and I won’t even get the cops involved, capisce?”
“Wait, Gary, please—”
“I don’t know who this Gary person is, but I’m not him. Go home, take your meds, and… fuck, I don’t know, just—”
“You mean you’re… not Gary Oak?” Goh asks. That doesn’t make any sense. The man in front of him looks just like him.
Something like recognition sparks in the other man’s eye. “No. I’m Blue Oak. Now, I really think you should leave.”

A freak accident while journeying with Ash and Goh leaves Gary with unintended side effects.
Ash lets out a pained little gurgle. “Gary, please, for the sake of your own pride, stop talking.”
“—I’ve always kind of wondered,” Gary goes on, despite Ash’s rising panic. “I mean, you have to put up with me. We’ve known each other forever, and your mom and my gramps have been throwing me at you for years. You probably don’t even know if you really like me or not—”
Goh slaps a hand over Gary’s mouth, muffling the rest of his statement before he can say something more incriminating. Ash’s bottom lip is already wobbling as it is. “Gary, I think you need to hear Professor Cerise’s theory before you say another word about anything.”
