Summary
Familiar’s have incredibly strong bonds with their witches, so much so that they can become one in body and mind. They can feel one another’s thoughts, see through each other’s eyes, hear through each other’s ears, and in some cases, use one another’s magic.
When this bond is broken, it has a heavy toll on the hearts and minds of witches and familiars. Death is the most common cause of a broken bond, leaving witches insane in the wake of their lost companion. It leaves familiars forever broken, alone, until their mind succumbs to the wild instincts their witch’s magic once warded off. To put it simply, they’ll die of loneliness and heartbreak.
Most familiars don’t survive the loss of their witch.
But Tommy is nothing if not a stubborn son of a bitch, and he’s been through it four times.
He finds a hill and watches the sunset, letting his mind slip away and hoping something comes to kill him.
A hand reaches out in the darkness, cradling the familiar like an old friend.
