He had taken her small hand and unfurled her fingers, showing her how many hours it would be before he wipes away her tears and presses a kiss to each of her cheeks.
He would call - the moment he could, as his father had gathered their cases he had stood at the wall, phone gripped in his hand - but the call would ring through and nobody would answer, and he would not get another chance to call that number for another many years.

Summary
The goal behind Stepanov lights up red and Jean freezes as though struck; all the forward momentum coming up short abruptly with the squeak of court shoes and his own whiplash as he stops dead in the middle of the court. The sound of the buzzer is like a gunshot in the sudden silence; a knife through the dread.
Like a compass point toward a magnet, Jean seeks out Kevin across the court where he too had come to a stop.
Kevin’s gone as white as a sheet, still and pale with his racquet clenched in his hands like he’s afraid someone is going to take it from him. He looks like he’s going to be sick, gaze trained on the stewards where they’re standing with their heads bent together in the outer court, mumbling and smiling and nodding, satisfied with their little game, unaware of the way that the whole team has gone tense and silent on the court below.
Jean looks at Kevin and feels the fear rising in him.
