Summary
Peter carefully slices into the pie and divvies it up onto separate plates while May tops them each with a dollop of whipped cream. Happy pours coffee into cups and starts telling a story about how his three-year-old nephew once snuck downstairs to eat a few handfuls of cherry pie in the middle of the night and almost gave Happy’s sister a heart attack when she found him in bed the next morning with his face and shirt smeared with dark red liquid. The atmosphere is warm and homey, like a page right out of a Better Homes & Gardens catalogue.
It’s all going quite well until Tony takes his first bite.
Or, in which Peter makes a truly horrendous pie, Tony’s teasing goes a little too far, and someone may or may not cough up blood.

Summary
Peter swallows and looks at Tony, unable to keep the heartbroken look off his face. His hand grabs for his book bag while his other sweeps the vials up. Maybe he’s being paranoid, but he can’t risk going back into the system. He closes his eyes, for just a second, to mourn the life he could have had.
“I’m sorry,” he says to Tony.
He doesn’t wait to see the man’s response before he pushes through the crowd of people and runs. “Wait!” Tony calls after him.
But Peter’s already out the door.

Before Ben died, Peter won a booth to present his project at the Stark Expo. But even on the run from the foster care system, he can't pass up the opportunity to attend and show the world his project. It all goes so well, until it doesn't. Trying to avoid being caught, Peter runs out on Tony just as the man is about to make him the offer of a lifetime.
Bold of him to assume Tony won't try to find him.

That was a side-effect of the soulmate bond people didn’t talk about much. It wasn’t just that you had to tell the truth when you spoke, there was this compulsion to speak: To answer every question, say every thought. You had to physically keep your mouth shut or the truth would leak out anyway.
He supposed it meant that there were no secrets between soulmates, but there were some things—like the fact that Peter being curled up in his mom’s blanket, flushed with fever and cuddly, was one of the cutest things he’d ever seen—that wouldn’t hurt to stay in Tony’s head.

Bruce creeps downstairs, opens the kitchen door and nearly has a heart attack.
Spider-Man, in full costume, hangs upside-down on a thread from the ceiling. In one hand he holds a spatula. In the other, a frying pan. He twists around and the white eyes of his suit go wide. ‘Oh! Uh, hey Doctor Banner!’
Bruce stares stonily back, feeling a headache creeping up the side of his forehead. ‘Hey, Peter,’ he says, like this is normal.Bruce doesn't consider himself to be much of a father figure. Until Peter comes along.

They take twin gulps of their tea and stare into the darkness. Then Tony shifts at the exact same second Peter does, and they both make swerving eye contact, and Peter is the first to crack a tiny smile of surprise.
"Hi," says Tony, stupidly.
"Hi," says Peter.
"How are you doing?" Tony whispers. There. There--he's said it. The gate has been opened, the line crossed. There is no going back from this--and even if Tony knows it, he doesn't believe he would ever choose to go back.
"Not so good," Peter admits. Miraculously, bravely, he is still meeting Tony's gaze.
"It would be very weird if you were," Tony says.
"I know," says Peter. "I dunno if I should--be telling you all this, though. I've already made you my, like, interest-free Uber ride. You probably don't need to add 'midnight therapist' to my tab."
