He’s a bit taken aback by this. By her current attitude. Sure, Shepard would always worry about her crew before and be concerned, but this seems…different. Hell, even when the crew had been mourning Ash’s death after Virmire, she still told them to shape up. To use her death as motivation. She practically yelled at Kaidan to get over it because it was her choice. So, this compassion is just…throwing him off. It’s not what he’s used to. Not what he knows about her. Hmm. Well, it’s probably just because of his injury, which still isn’t necessary.
“Promise,” he says, if only to satisfy her.
The smile he gets in return is worth it....

AKA, garrus figuring out how to become reacquainted with this new shep, who used to be so hardcore before she died, and is now the complete opposite. now she doesn't want to fire a single bullet if she doesn't have to. meanwhile, shep is trying to un-teach everything she had taught garrus during their first mission together. easier said than done. and this is all happening while they're both trying to navigate their unspoken feelings for one another.

Summary
Effected somehow by the Leviathan, Shepard no longer remembers her romantic relationship with Garrus. But her body doesn’t seem to agree with her new-found tunnel vision. Fighting with her own muscle memory of their time together, mistakes in her past threaten to resurface. Was the Leviathan right? Is the mission the only thing that should ever matter? What could be bigger or more important than saving the entire galaxy?
This is a different and more realistic take on a theory I’d written before in Back Where We Belong, inspired by some of the comments I’d received. I’d planned on putting it in as a Part 3, but I think it is too different and needs a place of its own
