Vi’s chuckle fades as she keeps eye contact with her sister, her hands not moving from her waist… her hands… are moving… her sister… closer.
The eye contact is too much for them so they each close their eyes, but their hands guide them. Vi pulls her closer, Jinx pulls her down.
Their lips touch, deliberately. They hold it for two heartbeats then let go.
“Umm, goodnight Jinx.” Vi doesn't open her eyes until she's turned down the hallway. She enters her room, closes the door behind her without turning, then slides her back against the door until she is sitting on the floor.
What the fuck just happened.

These days, Jinx can’t remember very much at all about the night her parents died, but the one thing she is fairly sure of is that it was raining– she can still hear the sound of the drops slapping against the window in the room she and Vi once shared, and she is almost positive that there had been thunder, too. Vi never really wanted to talk about that night, never wanted to confirm if the loud noises Jinx can still sort-of recall were thunder or just the gunshots of the home invasion that had taken their parents’ lives, so Jinx has never been able to figure out the difference between her actual memories and the gaps that had been filled by her own childish imagination.

She curls her bare toes into the soft grass and even softer dirt, inhaling deeply as she breathes in the scent of her carefully-cultivated violets; the ends of her bangs lightly caress her cheek and collarbone, and she giggles, then shivers, spinning around as she looks at the little corner of the world she and her sister had managed to find and claim all for themselves. The sun shines down brightly, the sky big and blue and full of fluffy white clouds, and it’s the kind of day that she and Vi rarely ever got to see as children, so she is more than happy to bask in it all, having just woke up in time to see the afternoon arrive.

At one time, there had been central air conditioning running throughout the home, but years of neglect while Vi and Powder had been raised by a distant relative had resulted in the entire house falling into various stages of disrepair, and while Vi has been steadily working on bringing it all back to its former glory, raising a fourteen year old and working a full-time job at the age of twenty-one very rarely leaves much time for home repairs, much less the money to fund them.
