That someone would look at Gene and think to offer him something, think to give him food or warmth or affection when he's done nothing but exist nearby? It's difficult to wrap his head around.

Or, what do you get when you combine German liquor, the giddy final days of war, and a couple of soldiers who have had just about enough of dancing around each other? If you're Joe Liebgott, the answer is an amateur piercing done by a Harvard dropout, of course.

The letter is almost unreadable, by the time Babe turns off of the interstate and into Baton Rouge. He ghosts a featherlight fingertip over the writing even now, long after the lead has been wiped away. He still remembers the word that had been there, feels it against his skin like he's a blind man reading braille. Cancer, it reads. Somewhere further down, another groove will spell out, low on time, first, then, nothing they can do. It's so cliche it makes Babe want to throw up.

Or, the one in which Gene and Babe survive the war, go back to their homes, and try to lead their own separate lives--until Gene gets sick, Babe gets a letter, and it all comes crashing down.
