The practice of highway robbery had long since died out in England by the 1810s; the last highwayman, Robert/James Snooks, having been hanged in 1802 for his crimes. These villains had sometimes been referred to as a ‘Gentleman of the Road’ and romanticised by many ordinary folk, but in 1814, a new villain began terrorising the roads around London. He was no manner of gentleman though. He was an utter rake.
