Will was pregnant. His body was changing, his world shrinking, and the others' awkwardness around his growing belly—a physical, tangible reminder of a path they weren't traveling—was almost palpable. The sessions were short, forced, lacking the carefree joy of before. None of them, not even Mike with his best intentions, really enjoyed the game like they used to. It was an empty ritual, an echo of something that no longer existed.
However, Mike persisted. After each failed attempt at normality, when awkward silence filled the basement after the others had left, he’d approach Will, who was already getting up with visible effort.
"Hey… can I walk you home?" he’d ask, his voice carefully neutral, avoiding looking directly at Will’s belly. "It's not good for you to walk alone… you know."
Will, exhausted physically and emotionally, sadness like a heavy cloak, nodded. "Yes, Mike. Thanks."
