Summary
The trial was a disaster beyond his darkest dreams.
Daeron had been as sober as he’d been in years, head aching and stomach roiling as flames danced before his closed eyes. The sensation of imminent doom had threatened to drop him where he sat, to make him heave and weep in a way that only a pitcher of wine would dull down, but he’d pulled on his helm all the same, had spurred his horse into action to face down Mad Robyn Rhysling, and the nightmare had begun.
Or: Daeron in the aftermath.

"But I threw open the gates.
I invited them in. I said, Help yourselves. Then watched
as they went room to room, taking, emptying
the shelves, sucking marrow from the bones,
and overhead, the sky filled with rain" -

Summary
When Frank does finally hit the ground, no one is in the room to witness it.
It’s a blessing in disguise. He doesn’t fall with the grace of an actor knowing that there’s a crash mat waiting, he falls like an overtired toddler attempting to walk three steps forwards. A step, a sway, and lights out.

Summary
He thinks about Bucky showing up in Delacroix with a shitty Publix cake and a smile on his face, about looking into Joaquin’s operating room with Bucky at his side. He thinks about Bucky crashing on Sarah’s couch or taking Sam’s spare bedroom in DC. He thinks about every time Bucky sat next to him on the couch and left only a sliver of space between their knees, about every time Sam noticed Bucky watching him from across the room, and hadn’t looked away even after being caught.
Sam had thought a lot of things. He thought Bucky knew how important starting the Avengers was to Sam. He thought he had Bucky’s partnership, his trust—in quieter, private moments, moments he’d never tell anyone else about, he thought he even had Bucky’s devotion.
Evidently, he was wrong.

Bookmarker's Notes
"This morning when you look outside it’s gone.
You make some coffee, take the kids to school, come back to find a paper on the lawn,
and drown the morning, waiting like a fool for something that was never really there,
or if it was, then only in a dream— a whiff of salt, a horizontal glare—
distractions insufficient to redeem a life devoted, mostly,
to the waste of youth, of strength,
of money, and of hope, of chasing what
far better men
have chased, and given up, and, unable to cope with failure, tried
in vain to chase again, like you, who can’t remember how it looks, that sea before which you’ve forever been
as helpless as
the heroes in your books." -
