Summary
It's not that Walsh wants to be mean, but she's too annoyed to be Florence Nightingale by way of Florence Henderson. If Abbot could go a month without getting stabbed or impaled, she'd commission Christina Tosi to make the celebratory cake.

Isn’t it the story everyone learns in school, didn’t they finish the book?

Summary
Jack Abbot was no stranger to the feeling of knuckles connecting with a mandible. He'd thrown enough punches as an unruly youth to know exactly how hard to jab to do the damage warranted.
Still, as his fist connected with the angled bone of Robby's jaw, a feeling of profound relief spread through his own body. Apparently, he'd been winding up to this for longer than he consciously knew.

Summary
Samira let out a long, unsteady breath and waved a hand toward him, her gesture broad and a little helpless. “You’re tough,” she said softly, almost a whisper. “Things like this don’t bother you.”
Jack almost laughed at that. He wanted to wrap his arms around her and then break apart there; tell her the truth - that the only reason that he didn’t seem bothered was that he was an exceptional liar. All the trauma, death and pain he’d endured had only taught him to keep his face still, never to become immune.
-
Set over the span of a year, Jack and Samira simultaneously find ways to cope with life and work after the mass casualty.
