Will blinked surprisedly, then cracked up laughing, “What?” he said, “Fake boyfriend?” he repeated, grinning, “You do realise — you know my boyfriend isn’t fake, right? I do have a boyfriend. For the past year and a half, actually.”
Will Byers’ boyfriend is something of a myth amongst the residents of RISD. Nobody has met him, he supposedly helped to save Will’s life, and he goes to Brown. Seriously… who is this guy?

Mike's teeth are chattering so hard they hurt. He's shaking, his voice is shaking, and everything is spinning. The world ripples like murky water through his tears and blotchy vision, but Will is still. He focuses on him, on the fingers trickling soothingly down his spine like they're strumming a harp, and the smaller hand wriggled into his own, on the warmth of the body beside his own.
"I-I thought I-I could just stop whenever I needed to..."
"But you can't?" Will whispers. He sounds anguished, and it floods Mike with more shame than he can stomach. He gulps loudly, and at the nauseated look, Will looks slightly alarmed before Mike manages to reel his sickness back.
"No..." Mike echoes. It's horrific to admit, "I can't."

Summary
Okay–maybe Mike did get attacked by that Demogorgon. Maybe Will didn’t really save him with powers that came out of nowhere. Maybe Mike actually died and somehow drifted into some other heavenly realm far, far from here. Because time was slowing down again, but this time the only impending doom was on Mike’s heart rate levels and chances of premature systole contractions.
OR
A look inside of Mike Wheeler's head when he overheard a life-altering conversation, almost lost his life, and his heart finally started beating again.
