Summary
“You’re not much of a talker, huh?” Orange-hair says. He shrugs, offering a helpless grin. “Neither am I usually.”
Kisuke finds that hard to believe.
“Well, none of my business. I only wanted to meet you,” Orange-hair says. “The names Ichigo.”
Kisuke doesn’t offer his name. He stubbornly keeps his mouth shut like a good Onmi operative. This could all be an elaborate set-up and he’s not taking any chances.
Snorting, Ichigo spares a single glance down at the body below him. “Well, you’d best be on your way now that you’ve achieved your goal,” he says. Even though nothing about it is an order, something in Kisuke feels compelled to follow his direction.
The haziness doesn’t fade from his mind until he’s back in Seireitei, reporting his success to Yoruichi. He doesn’t mention his run in with the non-human boy.

Summary
“If you’re going to make me feed on you, we can just do that in here,” Kisuke complains as Ichigo leads him through the halls of their home.
“Nope,” Ichigo says. “You gave that right up when you argued about eating with me for several minutes. Now you’re going to take a break.”
Kisuke struggles against Ichigo’s grip a little harder. “This is inhumane treatment!” he protests.
“You’re not a human,” Ichigo says dryly. Keeping ahold of Kisuke is more effort than he's willing to admit. It’s ridiculous how someone can be several hundred years old and still act like he’s a toddler. And it’s even more ridiculous that this is the man Ichigo fell in love with.
“That’s hardly the point here,” Kisuke protests.

“I can’t help being funny, Ichi-chan,” Kisuke argues. “It’s a natural part of who I am.” He’s speaking far too much for someone whose throat sounds like it’s been rubbed raw with sandpaper.
Rolling his eyes, Ichigo keeps his eyes trained on the wound, re-wrapping it carefully. And if it’s a touch tighter than it needs to be then Kisuke deserves it, the bastard. How dare he show up here looking halfway to death and then just wake up cracking jokes like Ichigo wasn’t scared out of his wits. Bastard.
“The only thing you 'naturally' are, is annoying,” Ichigo says.

Shaking away those thoughts, Ichigo rolls his eyes, feigning annoyance even as his lips twitch. “I don’t think you’re capable of blushing,” he says.
Kisuke flutters open his fan, hiding the smirk he’s probably wearing as he bats his eyelashes. “What a mean thing to say.”
Ichigo snorts and doesn’t bother replying. It’s not like there really needs to be words between the two of them.

“You know,” Kisuke says after a few seconds. Evidently, he’d found his voice. “There’s something I’ve been wondering about while you were away.”
“Oh?” Ichigo asks.
Kisuke hums. “Kept thinking about this orange-haired brat who looks at me with stars in his eyes and whose hand felt warm in mine. Kept wondering if he felt the same as me,” he says.
It’s beating around the bush, and Ichigo wants to laugh at the attempt. “If you’re asking whether I like you, Kisuke, the answer is yes,” he says.
Kisuke pouts. “I was trying to be romantic!” he protests.
Rolling his eyes, Ichigo grins just a little. “I don’t need you to wax poetic. I learnt Go for you, you idiot. That’s declaration enough.”

Summary
Ichigo huffs. “That’s not what he was implying,” he muttered, cheeks flushed again. He rubs at his temples like he has a headache.
Kisuke frowns. Then what- oh. “He thinks you’re fucking me,” he says. That makes sense. Ichigo has been protecting him since the day he arrived here, and he does stay in what was (is?) Ichigo’s bedroom.
A wounded noise slips from Ichigo’s lips, and he somehow looks even more embarrassed. “I didn’t mean for them to think this,” he promises, like he thinks Kisuke will be offended by the idea of being kept to warm his bed.
Looking at Ichigo, Kisuke has to admit he’s not opposed to the idea, he’d just never considered it. Ichigo isn’t bad looking and if he gets past the whole ‘technically a kidnapping victim being forced to stay in Hueco Mundo’ then really, Ichigo is an ideal partner from both an aesthetic and power standpoint.

“You should have told him,” Zangetsu hisses.
Ossan tilts his head in acknowledgement. Because this time, the hollow is right. He’s always been the one to make the calls on what Ichigo should and shouldn’t know, and this time was the same. Zanpakutou have an intrinsic understanding of the bonds that form between their wielder and another wielder. They could have told him at any point. But Ossan had convinced the hollow that their wielder’s soul bonded wasn’t to be trusted.
In his defence, he wasn’t entirely wrong.

Ichigo fights the urge to roll his eyes. Why does everyone insist on getting him involved with these guys? “I’m not a Shiba. And I’ve never been through the shinigami school, so there’s no chance of me being a shinigami either. Sorry to have wasted your time,” he says, completely unapologetic. He doesn’t say ‘so fuck off and leave me alone’ but he’s positive his look-alike gets the message given the narrowed eyes.
It’s silent for a moment before his look-alike shrugs and grins. “Right, well, be that as it may, there’s no way we aren’t related,” he says. “The name's Kaien.”

“Ah,” Shiba-san says. “Sorry. I’m not a Shiba.”
Kisuke frowns. There’s no way that this man isn’t a Shiba. It’s not possible to have this much resemblance and not belong to at least one of the branch families. Is he a bastard child? The Shiba’s usually take them in though. They’re big on family, and they aren’t likely to discriminate between ‘proper’ birth and ‘improper’ birth considering they’re the one great clan that doesn’t care for propriety at all. “If you say so,” Kisuke says. “What should I call you then?”
The man considers him for a moment, and it feels like Kisuke’s asked a question he shouldn’t have, which is ridiculous because he just wants to know this man’s name.
“You can call me Ichigo,” Ichigo-san says at last.

Summary
There’s nothing that Kisuke could ever do to repent for what he’s done. Ichigo doesn’t blame him, and maybe that’s what makes it harder. Because Ichigo doesn’t know about their soul bond. Soulmates are a shinigami thing. To humans, the red string of fate is a fun story plot point or the focus of romantic dreams. It’s not a part of reality.
For shinigami, soulmates are a part of life. Not everyone gets one, but when you face off against another shinigami with a zanpakutou, there’s a specific feeling of resonance from the clash that just screams this is my other half. And for Kisuke, the first time he faced Ichigo, the boys incomplete zanpakutou in hand, and they clashed, he’d felt it ring true in his soul.

“Kurosaki-sama!” they shout, and Ichigo splutters. What the actual fuck.
“Who the fuck are you calling ‘sama’ you bastards! Get out of here already!” Ichigo grouses, kicking the nearest one in the side for effect.
The man he’s kicked, a bulky bald man probably like 20 years old or something—he’s bad at ages, it comes with the territory of being surrounded by ghosts and shinigami so often—groans but he keeps his eyes locked on Ichigo and he doesn’t stop grinning and it looks like there are fucking stars in this guys eyes. Seriously. What. The. Fuck.
“Our boss wants to meet you, Kurosaki-sama!” another of the thugs shouts.
“Hah?” Ichigo runs a hand through his hair roughly. “I’m not going to meet your fucking boss, you idiots. Stop causing trouble around here and leave me alone.”
He goes to walk away, content that they couldn’t be causing Kimura-san or Suzuki-chan, her daughter, any problems when they head home in an hour or so, and one of them literally grabs onto his leg, clinging like a child.
What the hell has he done to deserve this.

“Why do you keep touching me?” Kisuke asks, finally.
It’s none of the circling that Ichigo’s expecting. He’s used to Kisuke talking his way around issues until he gets what he needs, and no one even realises what they’ve said because they’re too busy being confused over how their conversation got to that point. This is not that. This is direct and blunt—the way he prefers to do things. Which admittedly, makes his life easier.
“You like it,” he says. He’s not asking, because he knows. “And it gave me an edge.”
“You still lost,” Kisuke points out.
Ichigo hums, but silently disagrees. Because he feels like he won just as much with this fight. “Worth it,” he says instead, and grins when there is a slight flush of pink on Kisuke’s cheeks that goes just as fast.

Ichigo smiles, recalling the day when he was helping Takabayashi-san garden and the old man had explained the meanings behind different flowers. The noble death of a warrior and love.
“I’d like that.”An hour later, he takes his final breath and thinks, finally.

Because if he’s right, if this is who he thinks it is, then he wants nothing more than to go to Hueco Mundo this instant. His mind is a litany of Ichigo Ichigo Ichigo even when he knows logically that it’s not the best decision to make to avoid suspicion.
“As captain of the research department, your expertise will be invaluable, Urahara-taichou,” Yamamoto approves. “Any other volunteers?”
“Ah hell, I ain’t seen any action fer a while. I’ll go,” Shinji pipes up.
It’s amusing to think that maybe the Soul King is watching over him right now because this is the best-case scenario for him. If this is Ichigo, and it’s entirely probably that it is because his lover isn’t someone to be taken lightly, Shinji is the easiest one to convince to give him some leeway. From the sounds of things, Ichigo is completely hollow right now, and that means this is going to be rough. But he’ll do it because he loves Ichigo and he’ll do anything for him.
