    Summary

Kayne tapped a finger against Arthur’s temple impatiently. “Don’t hide those pretty eyeballs! Come on, I want to show you something.”

Within days of arriving back in New York, Kayne delivers a young 11 year old Oscar, fresh from bludgeoning McKenna, to Arthur’s doorstep. Oscar is frightened, unmoored, and grieving his old timeline, but he isn’t alone. Nope, Oscar’s got a pair of odd, enigmatic, kind men who have taken him in. Meanwhile, Arthur struggles with his paternal instincts and fears and John tries to learn how this whole ‘having a body’ thing works — though how human that body really is remains to be seen. Will little Oscar form a family in this new world — and could a particular hospitalized priest be part of it?

Collaborating as an artist for this piece for the Malevolent Big Bang 2025 was a blast. Thanks, Karsa, for creating this wonderful story!

    Summary

In one of many universes, it is not John who fades after the mines of Addison, but Arthur. Alone and with deals unfulfilled, John flees back to Arkham, taking on Arthur's name and job. Yet past is always close behind, and when a series of supernatural drownings is handed to him as a case - well, John only acts in his nature.

Mute and bound to an entity that deals in grief and music, water and mourning, John strives to do better than Arthur once had. But unfinished business from New York is at their heels, while the Great New One speaks in echoes of his old friend's voice. It is John's call this time - and tide may yet drown him completely.

“If we try to leave town, we die, and we return to the same instant that we first arrived?”
    “Apparently so.”
    “Fuck.”
    “Agreed.”

Stede, a librarian, and Ed, a Dungeon Master, share a passion for a good story.

When a malfunctioning 3D printer brings them together after months of pining from afar, they just might be able to find a happy ending of their own, thanks to their DnD characters: Blackbeard and The Gentleman Pirate.

    Summary

Ed is an engineer aboard the Revenge, an interplanetary research vessel on a multi-year mission to study Jupiter's moon Europa. An accident requires that Ed awaken from cryostasis over six months early, and finds his only companion to be Stede, the ship's onboard AI. They develop an unconventional friendship, but is it possible to have more?

This is classic mutual pining with a sci-fi twist, inspired by all of my favorite stories about the nature of personhood.
    -----
“You–” Ed was struggling to parse what Stede was saying. “You’re playing your version of this song for me, right now? Like, in real time?”

“Yes, Edward, that’s correct,” said Stede softly.

Ed’s brain momentarily seized up. He supposed it made sense that Stede was capable of learning a set of rules to do something like arrange and play a piece of music. There was something unnerving about this song, though. It felt, well–it felt organic . Reactive. Almost collaborative in a way. Ed was lost in the push and pull of it, until the last notes softly petered out.

“So, what did you think?” asked Stede. It sounded nervous again. Why the hell would someone program an anxiety response into a bot?
