“I found him,” Steve says, and Natasha can tell even over the static of the long-distance call that he’s bone-tired but there’s a lilt to his voice. A cheerfulness, she hasn’t heard in months.
She should feel happy for him. It has been half a year since she saw him by Fury’s empty grave. Months of hunting a ghost that doesn’t want to be found. And she is, sort of. Maybe. She’s also one-hundred percent sure that Steve didn’t find Barnes, but rather that Barnes had allowed himself to be found. “I’m glad,” she says and manages to sound like she means it. “You talked with him yet?”

Steve finds Bucky and brings him back to New York. Natasha just wants to make sure her friend doesn't end up with his throat slit for all his trouble. Bucky and Natasha both get to work on their trust issues.

This seems to work out just fine until a failed mission leaves Natasha with a mysterious affliction, and Bucky is forced not only to let her in, but to confront the lies that he keeps telling himself to get by.

Freshly back to New York in the upstate Avengers facility, Bucky Barnes decides on a little exploration to clear his head and stopping to appreciate a sunset means an encounter with the one person he's noticed has been tactfully avoiding him now for two months and when he finally gets her alone to ask her why, he gets the answer to a question that's been bothering him for weeks now: Why does he dream he knows her when there's no way in hell that should even be possible.
