That information, in and of itself, was enough to rock at least the hockey world. There had never been a publicly out player before, and Shane Hollander, straight-laced, always controlled, golden boy, would not be anyone's first guess as the resident queer player.
But it got so much worse. It was clear Shane had ended things with Derek, if only because of the level of vitriol in the article. It talked about them meeting. About secret dates. About Shane refusing to come out of the closet, causing Derek "extreme emotional damage."
And then it talked about the sex. Not just that Shane liked to be the bottom, but what exactly he liked. Derek accused Shane of being "almost frigid" until they had introduced kink into their relationship. The kink was a BDSM relationship where Shane was very much the sub. Derek maintained he hadn't really been into it (there were more accusations here of the damage this had done, implying that Shane had somehow forced the man into being a Dom).
Or: When Shane is horribly (like really horribly) outed, Ilya, who is playing in Russia, gets traded to his team, the Boston Raiders.

Summary
This fic lives in the spaces Rachel Reid leaves quiet. It follows Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov from the end of Heated Rivalry through The Long Game, then imagines a future shaped by love, community, and consequence.
Chapters 1–16 focus on the four-year gap between Heated Rivalry and The Long Game. These chapters trace the long, uneven process of staying in love while being forced apart by careers, secrecy, and fear. They linger on stolen moments, missed calls, private rituals, and the emotional labor of choosing each other over and over again after committing exclusively to each other.
Chapter 17 is a deliberate rewrite of a key scene from The Long Game that I couldn’t live with as written.
Chapters 18–45 imagine what comes after The Long Game in the upcoming Unrivaled era through my thoughts. This section centers on Shane and Ilya learning how to live publicly, build a community. Luca Haas becomes a vital part of that future, not as a threat, but as proof of how love expands rather than divides. Together with their growing chosen family, they confront an antagonistic podcast, TopShelf.
