Summary
Nightmare has grown weary of the constant strife between himself and his brother. Every time he manages to fuel the ever-persistent need for negativity in his system, Dream and his friends immediately sap it out of him.
So, Nightmare has decided he was done. If they believed the multiverse was better without negativity, he was okay with that. He'd well descended past apathy years ago.

Ink had prosopagnosia. What this means is that he lacks the ability to recognise face. This makes his job as protector of AUS a challenge, so he devises a system that will help him know exactly who is in front of him at all times.
Prosopagnosia (also known as face blindness or facial agnosia) is a neurological disorder characterized by the inability to recognize faces.
Holy shit I just hyperfixationed the hell outta this book.

Summary
A great source of despair draws Nightmare to an abandoned AU. There he finds an unfinished Sans with no name, no companions, no purpose, no world, and a soul. Nightmare gives him the option to get out of his abandoned, empty world. He accepts the offer but refuses to destroy anything or hurt people. Instead he finds another purpose. In return the Bad Sanses give him a home, companions, a life, and a name. They call him Ink.
Or: Before he can destroy his soul and enter the Doodle Sphere, Ink is recruited by Nightmare. He accepts his role as best he can, even if he sometimes feels like he is meant for something more.

Stick to the Reef. It's safe in the Reef. Nothing can hurt you so long as you keep close to the heart of our beautiful kingdom.
That's what everyone within the network of branching coral loved to preach. To go where the colorful shoals of tangs dared not to venture was to quite literally plummet into the void. Yet still, Cross could feel the current push upon his black-tipped webbing, guiding him towards the outskirts of the territory he knew so well. It was there he'd look out into the open ocean, trailing himself along the border where the water's temperature would drop to a gentle chill. Most would recoil. They'd move along in favor of the sun basked clearings where they could frolic in the warm sands.
Yet Cross didn't cower from the cold which grappled his bones and hardened his dark and pale scales. Instead he'd subtly lean into the growing darkness's embrace. The stories their queen, Dream, had spun of the world outside the Reef should be enough to have him steer clear as well- Yet still, Cross was nothing if not foolishly brave.
