She had been ready to burn it all down.
That is the thing Elphaba keeps coming back to, afterward, in the narrow hours when she can't sleep and the Emerald City hums green outside her window. She had been ready. Her whole body had been oriented toward it, toward the fire and the fight and Fiyero's hand and the sky opening up ahead of her like a door.
And then Glinda had looked at her.
And she had come down.
Or: what if the Wizard and Glinda did convince Elphaba to stay. And what if Elphaba starts to see exactly what Glinda has been surviving, deliberately, so that Elphaba could come home safe.

“We’re going to set him free.”
It’s a simple statement, yet the fast pace of Fiyero’s breathing as he walks back towards them tells Elphaba that he’s probably feeling a degree of anxiety. Either that or he’s just really excited. It’s hard to tell with him sometimes. But he’s most definitely tense, his arms in a weirdly stunted position as he holds the cub under his jacket.
As he comes to a stop next to Elphaba in the aisle leading towards the exit door, she has half a mind to take the cub from him, if only to save the poor thing from what’s most likely a highly uncomfortable situation. However, the determination in Fiyero’s eyes has her deciding not to. For now, at least.
“What?!”
Honestly, Elphaba didn’t even know it was possible for Galinda’s voice to get so high, and she can’t help but roll her eyes in very slight exasperation. “We’re saving him.”

It wasn’t as if she hadn’t imagined this before, ending it all someway or another. Eventually people would get bored of her as a savior, but saints lived forever. And what cost was martyrdom for eternal adoration? Glinda’s parents had told her she didn’t need anything except for people to love her. Even her life.
