Summary
In the end she is a little bit of a coward. She can rationalize it all she wants, can make the excuses about safety, about not wanting to disrupt the fragile peace, about removing unneeded components from the equation.
In the end she is a coward so she lets Ekko show Vi while she buries her nose into Council-related work, into papers and foundational documents for the Wardens.
In the end she sits at her desk as the sun sets and waits to see if Vi will return.
Caitlyn buys Vi something.

Summary
She is well aware that she is being difficult.
It would not be the first time someone has described her as that in more polite words, nor, Caitlyn suspects, will it be the last time someone does so. She is not trying to be difficult on purpose—there is rather no point in that and she has no desire to add to the stresses that those around her are already suffering. If anything, she'd much rather they cease this ridiculous babying and let her do things that will help.
She's healing, yes, but she's not incapacitated. She's wounded, yes, but she's not immobile. She has two good hands, half of a good leg, a good eye, and a brain that is gnawing desperately at the bars of its enclosure, rattling against the inside of her skull. She can't sit still, she finds it so difficult to hold her tongue and stars above, she's trying.
She really is.

Summary
She found it tucked into a back corner of a drawer of Mother’s desk. She hadn’t meant to look. She’d been doing a very good job of not looking. Mother had always been exceedingly prompt with dealing with everything she needed to and Caitlyn had long since cleared Mother’s for-later pile. She hadn’t needed to look.
But she’d wondered where Mother’s favorite pen had gone and although she knew it wouldn’t be in that drawer, she opened it anyway. Opened it, put her hand in it, come away with the feel of a soft, textured paper, the kind that Mother would have never used. Pulled it out and stared down at the shine of a copper foil and red print set in cream.
Caitlyn has never burned joss paper in her life.

Summary
"Mother," says Caitlyn. "I hardly think this to be a good idea."
"You'll have to forgive me for not taking your opinion into account, officer." Mother's head simply tilts up. "This is a matter not just of national pride, but national security. Furthermore, you misunderstand. This is not a discussion, nor is it a negotiation. It is an order from your Commander-in-Chief. You have been notified and you will serve."
Caitlyn scowls.
Mother holds her gaze with her own.
"Gold, officer," says Commander Kiramman. "Ionia demands no less before her enemies."
Caitlyn isn't supposed to be at the Olympics. And she's certainly not supposed to be flirting.

“Surprised you didn’t cancel,” the words catch her half by surprise but at this point Vi’s not sure she’s going to let Caitlyn Kiramman catch her by surprise ever again.
“Maybe you don’t know me as well as you thought you did,” she murmurs back, trying her best to keep her expression flat and placid the way the photographer asked.
A pause.
Vi steals a glance upwards at blue eyes that stare back down at her. There is, surprisingly, no heat nor hatred in them. Perhaps Caitlyn has always been a better actor than Vi gave her credit for. She’d certainly looked hurt when—fine, that’s unfair. That is unfair.
“Perhaps not,” says Caitlyn, expression still not moving, “given that we are now strangers.”

It’s a bad idea for many, many, many reasons. They’ve gone through hell and high water together, yes, arguably saved the world, if all of the threats were to be believed, but that’s in game, where Caitlyn is a very different person, where her knowledge and interests and attention to detail are key, where her avatar doesn’t fidget quite the same way she does—does it? She’s not entirely sure—where she’s just the Sheriff, a sharpshooter with an knack at figuring things out and not lanky Caitlyn Kiramman, sole heir to Kiramman Industries.

“Cait?”
That voice wobbles. Fear drips into those gorgeous eyes and for a moment she wonders if she could kiss it away. That thought disappears as quickly as the soft chill of the morning breeze sneaking in from under the hems of the curtains.
This person has said that name twice now, both times directed at her.
Is that her name?

“Maybe you two will kill each other and save the rest of us the trouble of having to execute you tomorrow.”

“You,” hisses the last person she thought she’d see here.

You could make a fist in the material, grab it, yank it, twist it, pull it, rip it.
You stare instead, stare at the cloth that has come fluttering down like the sickest kind of cosmic joke. It isn’t the stupid smooth silk of her bedsheets, not the soft pliant material of the bandages she wrapped your fists with once but it is a waterfall of canvas and it takes that hole in your heart that you thought was dried out and it sets it alight.

The restaurant is every bit the same as she remembers it to be, a little too crowded, a little too loud. The lady who seats everyone is the one who’s seen Caitlyn grow from a knee-high tot to well, whatever she is now. Her smile is the same too though her eyes soften briefly as they skate over her single companion.
“The same table?”
Caitlyn nods, throat tighter than she thought it’d be.

“殿下. Your Highness. The fireworks merchant.”
Vi dips to her knees and lowers her eyes the way she’d been drilled by Vander and the rest. Don’t get yourself thrown into prison, Vi. It’s not worth it. They’d literally kill you and then where would all of us be?
“Speak,” the voice is calmer than she expects.
“I bring tidings of the southern passes,” Vi begins, eyes still on the floor.
The silence hangs heavy.
“I asked you to speak,” the prince says, a deceptively gentle lilt threaded through with iron; Vi can hear the soft rustle of silks, can only see the way the prince’s feet shift as if the prince is sat more upright. “I have not asked you to stop.”

They blink at each other.
Left in varying states of confusion, indeed. Now more akin to the whiplash of being tossed off a horse.
