"I dunno. It just feels like a whole lot of nothing." Kenma pulls the closet door shut, stuffing their hands into their pockets. "Like, there's nothing I need to be or do. It feels...freeing."
Now that they say it out loud, they realize that it feels more and more right to say it's freeing. When they said they were a boy, they felt weird for liking girly things. When they said they were a girl, they felt guilty for wanting to act more girly.
When they say that they have no gender, it frees them of all of the stupid societal restrictions that held them down. They are well and truly outside of every norm of society.
They are well and truly a freak.
And that's okay with them.
"I'm...just Kenma," Kenma ends up saying, to finish off the conversation. "And that's enough for me."

In the living room, Kuroo was sitting cross-legged on the floor, his sleeves rolled up, sorting through a shallow cardboard box labeled in thick black marker: MISC TECH.
“What does this even mean,” Kuroo said, holding up a tangled cable that looked like it belonged in a museum.
“You labeled it,” Kenma said.
“That doesn’t mean I remember doing it.”
“You were mad at the modem. You put all the extra stuff in there after the third reset.”
“Why do you remember that?”
Kuroo was still muttering on the floor, feeding cables into a drawer-shaped organizer in uneven bursts. Mochi had claimed the corner of the box lid and was biting the edge with deep concentration, ignoring every attempt at redirection.
Kenma stood at the edge of the room and just—watched.
This was the part no one ever saw. The unglamorous middle of things. Noisy drawers. Half-cooked dinners. Recycled cardboard left too long in the genkan. The rhythm of a shared life lived at a low volume.
