Summary
In 1939 Britain is on the brink of the Second World War.
Young Mieczyslaw Stilinksi is evacuated to a small country village where he is placed with Derek Hale, a distant man who has kept to himself ever since he lost his family as a child and his sister died in childbirth some years before.
A sad and withdrawn child, Mieczyslaw is at first frightened of the blunt and withdrawn man, but gradually becomes accustomed to his gruff manner and begins to thrive under the surprisingly gentle and nurturing care of "Mister Derek".
