Despite the harsh words, her voice had softened slightly, and he wondered where she’d found that scrap of sympathy when her kindness was usually reserved for Helaena or Aemond. But then, he'd just been given life-altering— no, life-shattering— news, and he supposed his mother's own life had been shattered once or twice before. “Get dressed. Clean clothes, please. Try to look presentable, and not give your father reason to question his recent decisions.” She touched his arm and he looked up at her, his vision blurry with stupid, sudden tears. “It’s an honor. He chose you over her. Remember that. We’ll be waiting for you in the king’s chambers.”

This was not like his mother, whose features rarely softened these days unless in the presence of her grandchildren. "Is it about the feast?" he asked, trying for levity. "Will you require my sobriety at the celebration of mine own son's birth?"
"No, dear heart, it is not that." His mother shook her head and took a breath, and now he noticed that she smoothed a letter in front of her. She wore a dress of simple green velvet, her hair braided and coiled at the nape of her neck, but no jewels. Nor had she yet put on a headdress, or even a veil, which only added to Aegon’s sense of unease. His mother had summoned him before she had donned her full court costume, which meant she truly had words for him which could not wait. Now, she reached a hand out for him, from across her desk, and frightened, he took it, tightening his fingers around his mother’s. “I’m sorry. I wish I did not have to deliver this news to you today of all days, but it is best you know. She was your daughter, though you never met her."
Shortly after Maelor's birth, Aegon learns that his bastard daughter, born six years ago to the first girl he ever loved, has died.
