Summary
Valester chuckled, “You’re pretty popular now, how’d that happen?”, crossing her arms and shaking her head at the thought, she knew they didn’t really bother with trying to be friends with many people and just kept to themself, so this was a shock.
They replied, voice monotone and lower than Val remembered, “Well, it all started when this tall ma-”, before they were rudely interrupted by a tall figure rushing toward the two of them from the fields of plantation, yelling and waving,
“Hey, Soda! I’m done with the crows, there shouldn’t be anymore to deal with!”, once he approached the duo, he continued, “Unless they somehow resurrect from the dead… Which would be weird, since I did eat them.”
Silence. Complete silence.
Even Soda’s expression, which usually was hard to tell, was completely distressed, like this mysterious man was not meant to be here, before their explanation.

His ear flicks, once. The tassel of his earring sways. Slowly, he thaws. "You take quite good care of them."

"You do," he states like it is fact. "I have never seen such admiration until now," his smile, unlike yours, is wry. "Not even amidst my own tender garden."
You struggle to believe that. Considering that he can hear the needs of his crops while you're only guessing based on what's worked so far, you doubt you're anything more than decently appreciated.
Nonetheless, you say, "I'm glad to hear that. I'd like to think I do right by them."
Caldarus hums. It is a deep sound, from the bottom of his throat. It's a warm day today, but you shiver when you hear it. "My dear," he murmurs, "I cannot imagine you doing anything but."
Time passes. Life is good. By a twist of fate, your beloved finds a way to join you in your day to day life. He's getting stronger by the day--you don't think you've ever been happier.
The world, however, rarely brings itself to care about fragile hearts. The underground is stirring, and what lies beneath might be too large for anyone to handle.
Anyone, perhaps, save for a dragon.
