There had been light touches before, the shake of a hand, the barest brush of fingers, the more deliberate holding of hands on the way back from Tadfield. None of those held nearly the same weight as to what he asked of Crowley now. Crowley nodded, just once, but it was enough. He reached over to tentatively trace the tattoo on the side of Crowley’s face.

Summary
Phoenix harbours no illusions that getting his badge back is going to be an easy task, even if the hardest part of clearing his name is technically over. He's fully aware that his reinstatement is going to be a bit more complicated than just passing the bar and is going to be more of a case of:
Step 1: Save money to retake bar exam
Step 2: Study frantically to pass said bar exam
Step 3: Pass bar exam
Step 4: Hope and pray that he'll somehow be able to still pull in clients after his reputation got burned to the ground
Step 5: Haircut
Step 6: New suit
Step 7: Finally, finally confess his passionate love for Edgeworth that has been eating him up inside for the past 25 years
Step 8: ???? Lawyer???Thankfully he has a pretty solid support network of people willing to help him out. And if Edgeworth has anything to say about it, they'll probably be able to cut out a few of those steps along the way.
Which is why Phoenix promises himself one thing. If he passes the bar again, he is absolutely going to kiss the Chief Prosecutor square on the lips. Whatever happens after that, they'll just have to wait and see.

They didn’t talk about it. They both knew, of course, but they didn’t talk about it. It was unspoken, a mutual, silent agreement. Crowley could count on one hand the number of times they’d referenced it even obliquely, and each occurrence had carved a permanent scar in his tattered heart.
It was true, though. No less real for being undeclared. No less powerful for being locked away. It bubbled up, occasionally, when Crowley’s white knuckled grip slipped.
Currently, he was slipping quite a lot. The difference was that this time… this time, he thought Aziraphale was slipping too.
