‘I’m getting married,’ Lena breathes emphatically, entreatingly, and her attention snaps to like a band pulled taut. She watches with increasingly disaffected pliancy as Lena seizes both her hands in one of her own and flashes her left at her, right under her nose. ‘Say something,’ Lena laughs, a little too breathless, a little too conscious. ‘You’re making me nervous.’
Don’t, she thinks she could’ve said, and the vehemence of the very thought startles her. Why? is a little better, syntactically, in theory—less cruel, an open question, room for conversation. Really? is enthusiastic, breakwater, appropriate, adequate.
‘Oh, god,’ she says instead.

“Do what?” Lena asks, cocking her head. Internally, Kara tells herself to shut up at the same time she tells herself to stop being a coward and tell the love of her life that she’s, you know, in love with her.

Summary
There’s a tempest raging in Lena’s chest. Love and hate, anger and affection, the impulse to break down and confess everything – Hope, Lex’s final words, everything – and the betrayal that still haunts her, still makes her want to hurt, to sting back. A good person would push past the dark thoughts, put their effort into forgiving and moving forward. A good person wouldn’t take the easy route, and continue the cycle of hurt.
Kara brushes their noses together lightly, like she hasn’t brought Lena’s whole world crashing down with her lies, and the hurt pushes harder. The anger bubbles forth, and Lena clenches her jaw.
She isn’t good, after all, is she? She never has been. Just ask her mother.
Lena reaches down, aligns Kara’s fingers, and presses them inside to the knuckle.
OR
After the reveal, Lena decides to cope with her conflicted feelings through a friends with benefits arrangement – only, without the ‘friends’. Unsurprisingly, it does not end well.
An examination of Lena’s perspective in 5x01 through to the confrontation in 5x07, had things gone just a little bit differently.

“It’s not –” She huffs. Frustrated with herself. Starts again. “This is stupid.” She says, clicking her tongue, shaking her head. “I shouldn’t do this. I don’t have the right to do this and that’s why I haven’t – but I just –”
She looks at Lena beseechingly, a crease between her eyebrows, bright cerulean eyes just pleading with her to get it, whatever it may be. But honestly, it’s been a long day. A long month. A long five years and Lena just doesn’t have the mental capacity to guess anymore. Her heart is in her throat, her palms are starting to sweat, and she feels this sweet, aching hope just dying to break apart in her chest. But she’s been disappointed for far too long. Stuck in limbo, never actually getting anywhere. So, rather than playing this guessing game that Kara and her incoherent speech seem intent to rope her into, she just tells her as simply as she can. “Okay, usually I find your rambles endearing, but darling, you’re not making any sense.”

A slight pause. A stutter of her hips. A singular moment made up from memories of countless others, lighting up one by one in a vivid array of color where the past five months have been black and white. In your more delirious sleep-deprived states, you can almost convince yourself of things that Kara undoubtedly wouldn’t have approved of. It’s easy to avoid her objections when she isn’t fucking there, and easier still to believe that you can weather her judgement and the degradation of your own soul so long as it results in her safety. You would offer yourself to be the villain without hesitation if it meant you could use any and all tools at your disposal to drag your best friend back to this dimension-- you would grind all of your good intentions into the dirt with the pointed heel of your stiletto without a second’s thought just to know she was alive and well. There were no boundaries you would not cross to see her safely home, no darkness you would not pitch yourself willfully into if it meant having her back. No souls you would not sacrifice for hers, including (if not especially) your own. You are more afraid of never seeing Kara again than you are of becoming evil.

And why is it easier to talk to the Other Lena who wants to kill her than it is to talk to her actual best friend?
