The next morning, Vash wakes up feverish. He brushes it off and gets ready for his trip, hitching a ride on a bus to the next town. Spending a night in this other town, Vash wakes up feeling even worse, like he's coming down with something. He's antsy and can't sit still. Worst of all, heat pools in his abdomen. Stupid, Vash thinks. He does not already miss Wolfwood, or his stupid body, or his stupid mouth that nags and teases him constantly.
Vash groans. Now he's thinking about Wolfwood's mouth on him.

Summary
Wolfwood watches her leave, feeling trepidation in the pit of his stomach. What had Vash managed to get himself into this time? Wolfwood's normal skills of shoot first and ask questions later are of no use here, and he pauses before opening the door and peering inside.
It's obviously a storage closet of some kind; there are cleaning materials on the floor and a mop propped up against one side. A chair has been dragged in and set against the other wall, and Wolfwood lets his eyes scan over Vash. He's not wearing what he'd had on earlier, not just the coat; he's in a set of sweats and a tee that Wolfwood has seen him sleep in. His eyes are closed, and he's leaning against the wall, seemingly not noticing or at least not caring that someone has opened the door. There are drying white smears across his cheeks and chin, and vomit down the front of his shirt. Wolfwood swallows down the instinctual anger, the rage boiling within him.
This is what Vash had been doing on his own? It's clear enough, even to Wolfwood, what's been going on here, and even if it wasn't the large wet spot on the crotch of Vash's sweatpants would confirm.

Vash is pinned down.
He should never have let it get this far, he'd let his guard down too much, snuck away from Wolfwood so he wouldn't have to contend with that look he gives him when Vash drinks too much.
He shouldn't have drunk so much.
He could get away, could flip the man pinning him down into the dirty, broken glass-riddled alleyway, but the gun nudging against his temple gives him pause. He's not sure he's faster than this man's trigger finger, the man's breath coming hot and nauseating against the back of his neck.
He could get away though. Probably. If he could just make his limbs move. It's happened before, his mind and his body unsynced to the point where his limbs feel heavy and sluggish. He thinks maybe the man drugged his drink or maybe that's just wishful thinking, his own brain concocting a world where he isn't to blame for this.

"Spikey?" Wolfwood kneels before Vash to tap his face. He gets no reaction from the other man. "Vash—hey." He shakes Vash to wake him up, but to no avail. That's when he notices a red stain on Vash's side, darker than his coat, and a bullet hole. Wolfwood curses and lifts Vash into his arms to lay him on the bed, quickly unfastening the rows of buttons on Vash's coat to tend to the wound. His movements stop when he sees more than just a bullet wound under Vash's coat.
There's a suspicious bump on Vash's abdomen.

He grabs the keys from his motorcycle—god forbid someone comes by and steals his bike. His pistol stays on him; he doesn’t feel like dragging the Punisher along. As he moves toward the shed, he checks the revolver’s rounds, snapping the barrel shut when all six bullets are in place. He cocks the gun, now ready in case some maniac is bleeding out in there.
Then he hears it.
A faint cry.
“What the hell…” he mutters, quickening his pace. That’s not just any cry—it’s a baby. And as he gets closer, the sound confirms it.
“Fuck, you’re kidding me,” he breathes, pressing his back against the shed’s worn exterior. He counts down from three, then spins into the doorframe, gun raised.

“Can I ask what you pray for?” Vash asks, voice soft and even in the stillness of the church. The stained glass above the altar is broken in parts; Wolfwood can tell it was once beautiful. A symbol of hope and worship.
“Forgiveness. Absolution for sins.” Wolfwood pulls out a cigarette. “You know, the usual.”
“Can god provide that?” Vash asks.
Wolfwood knows it’s an actual question. Vash is curious, always inquisitive about what Wolfwood does at the altar, what he asks for from a god who may not care any longer about this planet’s inhabitants.
“I’m not sure, spikey. I don’t think he’s taking requests right now.” Wolfwood takes an inhale of the cigarette, blows the smoke out avoiding Vash.
“Will you take offense if I suggest praying to someone else?”
The air is still. The stained glass is covered by the cigarette smoke. Wolfwood considers his next words carefully.
