“We can leave,” Ranboo says, softly, like leaves falling. “After tomorrow. Run away. From Dream and Techno and Phil.” Ranboo’s palms are sweaty against Tommy’s cheeks. “Somewhere where no one can find us. Peaceful. Quiet, and we can throw our weapons into the sea.”
Tommy could see it. A sunlit hill, covered in flowers. A little cabin with a meadow for grazing cows and sheep. A babbling stream for fresh water. Ranboo, happy and smiling, offering him a basket of sunflowers.
It’s tempting. It’s wonderful. It’s syrupy sweet on the tongue of Tommy’s imagination. And yet - dawn is wetting her paintbrush in the ocean. It’s time for them to go.
